Why visit Amsterdam? SIGHTS & ATTRACTIONS - What to See & Do
For CULTURE - lots of museums: the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum, the Rembrandt House Museum, the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art, the Amsterdam City Museum and the Dutch Maritime Museum.
For FUN: the notorious (and touristy) Red Light District, the Amsterdam Sex Museum, the Hash Museum, the Heineken Experience for beer, or chill out in a Cafe or coffeeshop - plus plenty of nightlife. And if you prefer pain to pleasure, head to... the Museum of Medieval Torture Instruments!
TOURS: Amsterdam is a great city to just wander around, rent a bike or do a canal boat cruise - or do an organised tour by foot, bike, bus or boat such as those run by Amsterdam City Tours (who also operate day-trips from Amsterdam to other Dutch cities and places such as the Keukenhof Flowerfields). Other good tour options include Mike’s Bike Tours and this free Amsterdam walking tour. If you are heading to Amsterdam with a group of friends, Damtours have a number of fun activities on offer including beer bike tours and party boats.
Lonely Planet’s list of sights and attractions in Amsterdam provides further details on what to see and do in Amsterdam while you are there.
Top Tip: If you intend to see a number of museums or attractions in Amsterdam (or elsewhere in Holland), consider buying a Holland Pass, which will save you both time and money. It offers not only free and discounted entrance fees, but importantly allows you to skip some of the long queues at the most popular attractions, such as the Van Gogh Museum, for example.
